WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE — 2JZ RAT ROD

Never in a million years did we expect to see a Garrett GT42 strapped on the side of a 2JZ-GTE sitting in the exposed engine bay of a Model A rat rod, especially one with a custom-painted rocker cover and stainless manifolds. It’s an odd marriage of new and old, which on paper would sound wrong to most car builders, but, in practice, Brandon Dejesus has nailed the mish-mash of styles perfectly. When your car is airbagged and sitting on 20-inch Stance wheels, you would be sure to steal the show at any event you attend, whether it be import or V8 in flavour.
 
HANGING AT TJM

The night before the final round of the Demon Energy D1NZ National Drifting Championship, we found ourselves at the workshop of Team Jenkins Motorsports (TJM) as a bunch of unfamiliar faces thrashed away in two unfamiliar cars. TJM had been taken over by two Aussie drifters, who were over here to contest the Hi-Tec Oils trans-Tasman competition. After a disastrous round in Christchurch, new engine builds and dogbox conversions were underway. These Aussies certainly don’t give up without a fight. We took a closer look at Matty Hill’s Nissan S15, running a 2JZ engine that had literally just been bolted in.

FORD MUSTANG CONVERTIBLE


 

PRICE: £38,495  ENGINE: 5.0-litre V8, 412bhp

FORD struck gold by bringing the Mustang to the UK. It’s competitively priced, has sharp looks and with hardly any rivals offering something similar, it’s easy to see why there’s a 12-month waiting list for cars coming here. We’ve already tried the 2.3-litre EcoBoost Convertible (Issue 1,420) and were quite impressed, but now it’s the turn of the V8 model to strut its stuff. Just like the EcoBoost, this car has a two-stage roof, with a manual grab handle that unlatches the canvas hood from the windscreen header rail, then a button retracts the top electrically. The whole process takes 10.5 seconds, which is the fastest folding of the six cars tested here, while closing the roof takes 12.2 seconds – second only to the Porsche Boxster. You can operate the roof while moving, too, but it only works at a maximum speed of 3mph, which hardly makes it seem worthwhile. When the roof is down, you get some buffeting, but it’s not much worse than in the Mercedes S 500, and the Ford does without any kind of wind deflector to smooth out airflow. What you can really feel is the car flex and move, as the chassis doesn’t have the stiffness found in the coupé. Bumps in the road send shudders through the cabin, and you can see the car twist as you drive through a series of bends. But what the Mustang loses in composure it more than makes up for with its rumbling V8 soundtrack. This 5.0-litre engine note redeems any aural disappointment from the EcoBoost model, and the whole car shimmies every time you blip the throttle. Wind it up, and the Mustang delivers fantastic straight-line performance, while Ford’s TrackApps allow you to perform perfect standing starts, or there’s the Line Lock mode so that your inner racer can smoke through a set of rear tyres. Yet the car is at its best when you’re taking it easy and soaking up the summer sun. The V8 simply burbles along in sixth gear at any speed, and while the ride is on the firm side, it’s comfortable enough in most situations. With the roof up, the cabin is nearly as comfortable as the coupé’s, yet with that V8 soundtrack just a press of your right foot away, you’ll want any excuse to get the roof down so you can hear it in all its glory.

ROLLS-ROYCE DAWN


PRICE: £265,155 ENGINE: 6.6-litre twin-turbo V12, 563bhp


FROM the moment you swing open the expansive rear hinged door of the Rolls-Royce Dawn, it’s clear that you’re dealing with something special. This £265,155 four-seat convertible exudes opulence. Push the starter button, and the huge 6.6- litre twin-turbo V12 sparks into life in near-silence. It’s the same engine as in the sportier Wraith coupé, only detuned to 563bhp here to better suit the Dawn’s elegance and more relaxed character. Extreme acceleration might not be a Rolls-Royce trait, but don’t think this means this 2,560kg car is slow. With 780Nm of torque on offer and an eightspeed automatic gearbox, the Dawn serenely takes off and whisks you forward. The 0-62mph sprint takes 5.0 seconds, but the Roller’s strengths are its long-legged lope and incredible comfort. The transmission uses the sat nav to select the right gear for the section of road you’re on, while the air-suspension cushions you imperiously. The dampers control the chunky body with velvety smoothness, but guide the delicate, narrowrimmed steering wheel into a corner, and the Dawn takes a little longer to respond. You can carry surprising speed but, with just one default driving mode, this isn’t a car you hustle along. You revel in the refinement as you cruise along peacefully. With the roof down, tyre noise is almost non-existent, and with the roof up, it’s as silent as the Wraith. In fact, Rolls-Royce says the Dawn is the quietest open-top car ever made, and it’s easy to see why. Some convertibles look a little awkward with the roof up, but the Dawn’s electrically folding canvas top has been sculpted so the lines are as elegant with it up as when it’s stowed. The sumptuous interior shows off the British brand’s exquisite craftsmanship, with wood veneers and plenty of chrome and leather sending the right message. Ensconced inside, with a glorious view down the long bonnet and over the iconic Spirit of Ecstasy grille mascot, you get an unrivalled level of comfort for a cabriolet. It’s incredibly spacious in the back, and with the top up there’s enough headroom in the rear to give full-size adults plenty of space. There are a few areas where the Dawn falls down, though: at £265,155, it’s eye-wateringly expensive, while BMW drivers will recognise some of the button logos and the layout of the infotainment system. Still, with bespoke features like the dainty switchgear, it’s churlish to pick holes in such an accomplished, superbly luxurious convertible.

CATERHAM SEVEN 620S


PRICE: £44,995 ENGINE: 2.0-litre supercharged 4cyl, 310bhp CATERHAM’S Seven 620 takes things to the next level in performance terms. Dropping a Ford-sourced 2.0-litre supercharged four-cylinder engine into the iconic British sports car makes for a rabid lightweight machine in 620R form, but for this latest 620S model, Caterham has dialled things back slightly to deliver a more usable road car. The S Pack adds a five-speed manual box with longer gearing, so the 620S is actually a relatively decent cruiser. Full weather protection and a heater are also on the menu. Then there’s the optional heated bucket seats. They cost a cool £1,000, but if you want to use the Seven in the winter months, they make the car much more habitable. On top of this, the Sport suspension set-up isn’t as harsh or as uncompromising as the 620R’s racetuned dampers, while 15 - inch wheels also come as standard. However, there are relatively narrow rear tyres, so the 310bhp and 297Nm of torque will make the rubber spin if you try to surge off the line. The 620S is also manically fast. Dial the right revs in, side-step the clutch and the 0-60mph sprint will be over in just 3.4 seconds. But the potent torque figure means this 610kg car doesn’t just thrive on revs. You can surf the wave of performance in the mid-range by short shifting and savouring the snickety five-speed manual gearbox. The soundtrack will be familiar to Caterham fans, too, and even through our test car’s quieter track day exhaust, the 2.0-litre unit’s bassy blare is easy to hear. Yet with the buzzing supercharger roaring away under the bonnet, there’s an extra element of aural excitement to take into account here as well. The 620S’s strong suit is common to all Caterhams, though. The beautifully uncorrupted, non-power-assisted steering ripples with feedback and draws you into the driving experience even further. Gel with the Seven, and it definitely feels like it’s on your side – working with you to deliver incredible driving enjoyment. And while the 620S might not be the most practical convertible, even in the wide body SV form of our test car, nothing on the market offers quite the same blend of crushing performance and usability. However, these thrills don’t come cheap, as the focused Caterham costs a substantial £44,995. 620S is full of feel and sounds great, while five-speed box is good to use. Stripped-out cabin contributes to low 610kg kerbweight

FESTIVAL OF MOTORSPORT


Record 540-plus entry for 2016 ‘Classic’. A record matching entry of more than 540 Historic touring, sports and open wheeler racing cars spanning eight decades has been received for the 27th annual Phillip Island Classic Festival of Motorsport. Staged from March 11-13 on the spectacular Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit by Victorian Historic Racing Register, the event has attracted over-capacity fields for Touring Cars, Production Sports Cars and Historic Formula Ford open wheelers. The record 58 races for (a record) 12 Historic categories will be held from early afternoon on Friday March 11, with the final event late on Sunday. Because of the huge entry, there will be no time for the circuit parades and demonstrations that have been a part of previous Phillip Island Classic FOM meetings. Feature races will include a 10-lap event for Historic Touring Cars on Saturday afternoon and similar 10-lap sprints for ‘big banger’ sports cars and open wheelers on the Sunday afternoon. “There will only be non-stop racing on Friday afternoon and 9-5 over the weekend,” said VHRR President Ian Tate. Around 30 thundering V8-engined Formula 5000 racing cars are also expected to line up, while the Classic has attracted Formula 1 cars from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Meanwhile for Touring Car enthusiasts, this year’s event will have special meaning with Patron and four times Australian Champion Jim Richards racing an ex-JPS Team BMW in five separate capacity-grid Group C & A races. To support the ‘100 Years of BMW’ celebration at Phillip Island, Richards will also bring his own ex-Team JPS M3 to the meeting – a car he drove in the early rounds of the 1987 ATCC on his way to win his second title. EMPOWERING ENGINEERS


Victorian Industry programs working group project are well advanced.

Working closely with the Victorian Government Department of Education and Training, the Society of Automotive Engineers-Australasia (SAE-A) is heading up the Industry Programs Working Group (IPWG) and is making positive progress towards opening up opportunities within wider industry sectors for skilled Automotive Engineers. With the imminent closure of the three large vehicle manufacturing plants there has been widespread concern within the State Government, Industry and the SAE-A that this could lead to the loss of engineering knowledge and skills to Australian industry. Detailed research and work over nine specific industry sectors outside the automotive industry identified by the State Government and the SAE-A is producing positive prospects for engineers seeking exciting new opportunities. “The aim of the IPWG is fundamental to empowering engineers and professionals to make their next career decision into roles that add value to the employer and where the engineers can utilise their skills, knowledge and experience with long term benefits to Australian industry,” said Kelvin Clissold, Manager, Industry Programs Working Group, SAE-A. Detailed research and analysis undertaken with key stakeholders is now completed in sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, defence and aerospace, construction, oil, gas and energy, mining and metals, health, electricity, gas, water and waste services, mining and metals, education and training plus light and heavy rail. Surveys have also been widely publicised through FAPM and SAE-A members and promoted via the HR departments of the car companies. The SAE-A’s focus is on the needs of the engineering professional at the individual level with more than 100 engineers in the automotive industry and supply area surveyed with input also from universities and training institutes. This research is producing positive signs and bringing about a greater awareness of the opportunities for engineers to  make a valuable contribution to industries identified as being important for the further development of the state’s economy. A skills matrix produced by SAE-A, maps in detail the automotive professionals skills, knowledge of various advanced processes, project management experience, etc. and overlays these skills against those required by other industry sectors. This process has clearly illustrated the breadth and depth of the transferable skill set possessed by automotive engineering professionals and confirms the likely benefits they could bring to Australian industry as a whole. Recent positive outcomes for the industry include Ford Motor Company retaining up to 1,000 engineers in their Australian Design Centre for global development, development and test engineers remaining at Holden and component manufacturer Continental (VDO) retaining more than 30 engineers within Australia for future product development plus engineers starting their own businesses. Engineers who have transferred to industries outside the automotive area are already bringing high level automotive skills to industries such as plastic moulding, defence, modular designs in the building industry as well as the development of new processes and project management in areas such as mining and construction. “Whilst there are positive signs that some form of automotive manufacturing will continue in Australia in areas of special vehicles, defence and recreational vehicles, there is a strong focus by the IPWG in identifying opportunities outside the automotive industry,” said Kelvin Clissold. “Various training programs are also being developed and industry stakeholders are being made aware of this valuable resource and the high level of skills these engineers can bring to industry,” he said.
